Gunmen attack police station in Anambra, kill two officers

In a violent assault believed to be orchestrated by secessionist elements, gunmen attacked Umunze police station in Anambra State on Monday, leaving two officers dead and a section of the station engulfed in flames. The attackers stormed the premises in the early hours, firing indiscriminately and detonating improvised explosive devices.

The town of Umunze, located near the Imo State border, has seen rising tensions, with frequent assaults on police stations in recent times. This latest incident adds to the growing list of tragedies that have plagued the Anambra South Senatorial district.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the police command, confirmed the attack in a press release, detailing how a joint security team comprising the Police, Army, Navy, and Civil Defence recovered five unexploded devices at the scene. The operatives have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, determined to bring them to justice.

During the assault, two brave officers lost their lives in the line of duty while defending the station from further destruction. Their bodies have been taken to the morgue as the police continue their investigations. Commissioner of Police Obono Itam has since visited the site for an on-the-spot assessment, reinforcing security measures in the area.

SP Ikenga urged the public to provide any relevant information that could assist in tracking down the attackers, assuring full confidentiality for those who come forward.
