Gunmen tragically ambushed a police patrol team in Delta State, killing Corporal Chibuzor Ojobule in a brazen attack on August 18. The incident occurred along Commissioner Road off UTI in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, as the assailants intercepted the police vehicle, fatally shooting Corporal Ojobule, who was driving the patrol van, before fleeing the scene. The fate of the remaining officers and whether any weapons were stolen remains unclear, with Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, stating that details are "not confirmed."
The killing has sparked outrage and sorrow, with the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancement (ISRCA), a civil society organization known as “No Justice, No Peace,” expressing deep condolences to the Delta State Police Command and Corporal Ojobule's grieving family. ISRCA National Coordinator Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen condemned the senseless violence, highlighting the growing threat to both security forces and civilians.
“This tragedy underscores the grim reality that police officers, alongside ordinary citizens, are increasingly becoming targets of insecurity,” Agberen stated. He emphasized the role of civil society in advocating against such crimes and criticized the political leadership for contributing to the nation’s security challenges. “The insecurity we face today is a consequence of the actions of a few in power, and unless they take responsibility, it will eventually reach even the highest echelons of society,” Agberen warned.
Corporal Chibuzor Ojobule, a devoted family man from Delta State, leaves behind a wife and five children. His untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by those who work to protect the public in an increasingly volatile environment.
