Governor Adeleke Orders Review of Teenager's Death Sentence for Stealing a Fowl in Osun State
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State orders an urgent review of the case of a 17-year-old sentenced to death for stealing a fowl, amid public outcry and calls for clemency.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered a prompt review of the case involving a 17-year-old boy sentenced to death for stealing a fowl, following widespread public outcry over the harsh punishment.
In a statement released on December 17, 2024, by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the Governor directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to investigate the case and begin the process of granting clemency before the year ends.
“I have received the report of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl. Consequently, I have directed the Attorney General to commence a full investigation and initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man," Governor Adeleke wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The Governor further emphasized Osun State’s commitment to justice, fairness, and the protection of life. He assured that the case is being handled with urgency and direct attention.
The teenager in question, Segun Olowookere, was convicted by the Osun State High Court in Ikirun for stealing a fowl and eggs from a poultry farm in Oyan, Odo-Otin Local Government Area. He is currently held at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison.
Segun’s parents, who have appealed to the Governor for clemency, are hopeful that his intervention will lead to justice tempered with compassion. The Governor’s swift response has sparked hope among Segun’s family and supporters, as the public awaits further developments in the case.
