Gov Obaseki names Edo arena after Rema
Edo Governor Obaseki names the new 6,000-capacity Edo Arena after afrobeats star Rema, honoring his global impact and Edo heritage.
In a move that celebrates both local talent and global achievement, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has announced that the new 6,000-capacity Edo Arena will be named after internationally renowned afrobeats artist, Rema. The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony of the project in Benin City, where Rema himself was present to lay the first block.
“It was a pleasure to have our global music icon @heisrema join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City,” Governor Obaseki shared via X, shortly after the event.
Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, returned to his hometown of Benin for a special homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium. His presence at the groundbreaking ceremony underscores his deep connection to Edo State and his role as a cultural ambassador. Known for weaving the legacy of the ancient Benin empire into his music, Rema has become a proud symbol of Edo heritage on the global stage.
Governor Obaseki emphasized that the arena, once completed, will be a hub for various events, including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large gatherings. He highlighted the arena's potential to attract more visitors to the state, thereby boosting local tourism and creating employment opportunities for Edo’s youth. “This venue will allow visitors to experience our rich culture and what we have to offer,” the governor noted, underscoring the broader impact of the project.
