Nigerian gospel reggae legend, Buchi Atuonwu, popularly known as Buchi, has opened up about his remarkable journey from cultism to Christianity. In a revealing interview on “Black Flame” with “Gaise Baba“, the renowned artist shared how a life-altering spiritual encounter turned him away from his dark past and led him to embrace the gospel. Gospel Singer Buchi’s transformation is truly remarkable.
Buchi, who is today celebrated for his unique fusion of reggae music and Christian messages, recalled his involvement in a cult group during his early years. At the time, he believed cultism was simply about loyalty and camaraderie. However, a spiritual epiphany helped him realise its deeper, more dangerous spiritual implications. “You can’t bring a knife to a gun fight and hope to win. It’s a spiritual thing,” he said, highlighting the shift in his understanding.
The gospel artist shared on his Instagram account a snippet of his full journey and his encounter with Christ. He explained how Gospel Singer Buchi discovered his faith.
A pivotal moment came during a late-night procession. He led over 200 individuals—some carrying coffins, others red lamps—through a tense and eerie scene. As he chanted, a mysterious voice whispered from his left side, “You don’t belong here.” That moment, Buchi says, marked the beginning of his transformation. He soon began questioning his path and turned to Jesus Christ for redemption and purpose. This revelation led Gospel Singer Buchi to his calling.
Before becoming a full-time gospel artist, Buchi had a successful academic stint as a lecturer at the University of Lagos. He also worked as a DJ in nightclubs. His transition from academia and nightlife to ministry is a rare and inspiring journey.
