GM cuts 1,000 software positions in order to focus on AI and quality
GM eliminates 1,000 software positions in order to focus on AI and quality.
In an effort to concentrate on more "high-priority" projects including enhancing its Super Cruise driver assistance system, the caliber of its infotainment platform, and investigating the usage of artificial intelligence, General Motors is laying off about 1,000 software employees globally.
A GM spokeswoman, Stuart Fowle, told TechCrunch that the job losses had nothing to do with individual performance or cost-cutting measures. Instead, they are designed to facilitate the company's faster growth as it attempts to compete in the "software-defined vehicle" market.
According to Fowle, for instance, this can entail concentrating on infotainment elements that are most important to users rather than creating a wide range of options.
Following GM's recent struggles with software issues, there is a shift. In late 2023, the carmaker briefly stopped selling its new Blazer EV due to technical issues with the initial batch of vehicles.
