Four teenage girls drown in Jigawa river
Four teenage girls tragically drown while swimming in a Jigawa pond, with only one survivor. Police urge caution during the rainy season.
In a heartbreaking incident, four teenage girls from the same family drowned while swimming in a pond at Malkaderi village, Gagarawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The tragedy unfolded on Saturday evening when the girls, aged between 11 and 13, went to swim but were tragically pulled under by the water. Their bodies were recovered by local Good Samaritans.
Confirming the incident, the Jigawa State Police Command spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, shared that five girls initially went to the pond, but only one, 8-year-old Sahura Audu, survived after being rescued and treated.
The victims, identified as Saina’u Musa (12), Fiddausi Ado (11), Habiba Musa (12), and Bahijja Musa (13), were declared dead upon arrival at Gagarawa Primary Health Care. Police and local divers had rushed to the scene for a rescue operation, but sadly, it was too late for the four girls.
Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, expressed his deep condolences to the grieving families and emphasized the need for vigilance, urging parents to supervise their children and warn them against swimming in ponds or rivers, particularly during the rainy season when water levels are dangerously high.
This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving the entire village in mourning.
