Floods destroy 250 homes, displace hundreds in Katsina

A relentless three-day downpour in Natsinta village, located in the Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State, has resulted in the destruction of at least 250 homes, leaving hundreds of residents without shelter. The torrential rains, which occurred between August 15 and 17, 2024, have plunged the community into a state of despair, as many families lost not only their homes but also essential belongings.

Hon. Mustafa Yusuf, the representative of Jibia Constituency in the Katsina State House of Assembly, visited the affected community on Saturday to assess the extent of the damage and to offer his support. He vowed to advocate for immediate assistance from the state government to help the victims recover from this disaster.

Highlighting the critical need for emergency relief, including shelter, food, and other essential supplies, Hon. Yusuf called upon government agencies, philanthropists, and compassionate individuals to step forward and assist the displaced residents.

Mas’udu Lawal, also known as ‘Sarkin Yashi’, a resident of Natsinta, attributed the disaster to inadequate drainage systems in the village. He pointed out that the blockage of a vital drainage channel exacerbated the flooding, leading to the widespread destruction.

Shamsu Hassan, a local Councilor, described the chaotic situation, noting that many residents are struggling to find temporary shelter, further aggravating the hardships faced by the community, which is already burdened by poverty and food insecurity.

Although no fatalities were reported, some residents sustained injuries during the incident. The District Head of Dadadara, Alhaji Usman Usman Nagoggo, expressed grave concern over the unfolding crisis and urged for urgent intervention to alleviate the suffering of the affected residents.
