Flooding in Jigawa State has claimed 28 lives and displaced over 6,000 families. With severe impacts across four local government areas, the state has set up more than 20 IDP camps to provide essential supplies and support to those affected.
The catastrophic flooding in Jigawa State has tragically claimed 28 lives and displaced over 6,000 families, as reported by Dr. Haruna Mairiga, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Dr. Mairiga revealed to reporters that the floods have wreaked havoc across four local government areas: Auyo, Buji, Jahun, and Miga. The disaster has caused significant disruptions, rendering local government offices inaccessible and forcing the state to establish more than 20 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. Many displaced individuals are currently taking refuge in primary schools or with relatives.
“Our agency has recorded over 5,000 internally displaced persons in these camps, not counting infants,” Mairiga explained. The severity of the situation has led to the creation of up to three IDP camps in some areas.
To address the urgent needs of those affected, the government has supplied essential items such as drinking water, toilets, and mosquito nets, aiming to provide some relief and support to the flood victims.
