Five arrested over alleged cyber crime in Benue
Benue Police arrest five suspects for identity theft and cyber fraud in Makurdi, seizing phones linked to scams. Investigation ongoing.
The Benue State Police Command has taken a decisive step against cyber fraud, arresting five individuals suspected of identity theft and online scams.
In a statement from Makurdi on Friday, Police spokesperson SP Sewuese Anene shared that the Cybercrime and Narcotics Department conducted a targeted operation after gathering intelligence on the suspects, who range in age from 18 to 21. Raiding a hideout in Makurdi, officers seized three iPhones, a small Tecno phone, and two other smartphones linked to the alleged fraudulent activities.
Anene revealed that these individuals had been using stolen identities to deceive and defraud unsuspecting victims. Commissioner of Police, Steve Yabanet, urged residents to remain vigilant against cybercrime while affirming the Command’s commitment to eradicating crime across the state. He issued a stern warning to cybercriminals operating within Benue, stressing that those caught would face the full weight of the law.
