FG suspends prison officers involved in alleged Bobrisky’s bribery
Several officers at Kirikiri Custodial Centre have been suspended after an audio leak revealed Bobrisky was allegedly provided an apartment outside the facility. Investigations are ongoing.
Following an audio leak that revealed Bobrisky, sentenced to six months in jail, was allegedly provided with an apartment outside the Kirikiri Custodial Centre in Lagos, the government has suspended several officers linked to the incident. Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), confirmed the suspensions in a statement released in Abuja.
The suspensions came shortly after the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, launched a probe into the allegations. According to Ahmed, the suspensions are necessary to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter, and the findings will be made public once the investigation concludes.
The officers suspended include:
- Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections, in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) at Kirikiri, Lagos.
- Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kirikiri, Lagos.
- ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, based at MSCC Afikpo, Ebonyi State, for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate outside the custodial facility.
Additionally, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the MSCC in Kuje, Abuja, was also suspended for reportedly receiving payments on behalf of an inmate.
These actions underscore the government's commitment to addressing misconduct within the correctional service and ensuring accountability at all levels.
