Just days before the opening ceremony of the Olympics, news about an Australian woman who was gang raped is reported.
The distraught 25-year-old woman told police that at around five in the morning on Saturday, she had taken sanctuary inside a kebab restaurant a short distance from the renowned Moulin Rouge cabaret venue and had been attacked by five males "of African appearance."
The woman also claimed her cell phone had been stolen. She was described as having "her dress inside out" and holding her underpants in her palm.
"She was taken to Bichat hospital, disoriented and unable to speak a word of French," according to the owners of the Dounia kebab business, a late-night Lebanese eatery on Boulevard de Clichy, who had phoned the police for assistance.
Renowned for its theatrical and artistic establishments, the street doubles as a red light area, housing a sex shop and a lap dance club beside Lebanese trattorias.
The woman told investigators about her awful experience while attending the Fete de Musique music festival in Paris, but she apparently couldn't provide specifics about the attack's location or circumstances.
As hundreds of thousands of visitors swarm the French capital for the Olympic Games, Parisian police seek to prevent dread from spreading among the traveler population.
Since then, information has surfaced that the alleged attack occurred the day before the young woman was scheduled to return to Australia, where she is safe.
Police are currently reviewing CCTV evidence, but they claim they will continue to look for the 'young and of African appearance' accused culprits even after she leaves France.
The Paris Prosecutor's Office declared that the incident was being looked into.
"The second judicial police district has been tasked with investigating the charge of gang rape that is believed to have occurred on the night of July 19 to 20," the Paris prosecutor's office stated.
Investigators will "do everything to quickly identify the individuals and bring them to justice," according to the Alliance Paris Police Union.
The attack occurs a few days before the Olympics begin, even though Paris launched a significant security effort in advance of the competition.
There are now metal barriers lining the Seine, and armed guards have been observed patrolling the streets.
The defense system will consist of a massive army of 18,000 soldiers and about 45,000 police officers recruited from 43 different countries.
However, in addition to human labor, the "unprecedented" operation will also involve a number of airborne units, such as helicopters carrying skilled snipers, AWACS surveillance aircraft, Rafale fighter jets, and Reaper surveillance drones.
In Paris and Marseille, around 1,700 British police personnel are already providing support to French cops and UK sniffer canines that have been personally chosen by French authorities.
