Femi Falana Calls for Compensation for Victims of Recent Stampedes in Nigeria
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana urges the Federal Government to compensate families of victims of recent stampedes in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja, blaming security lapses for the tragic incidents.
Renowned human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, has called on the Federal Government to compensate the families of victims involved in the recent stampedes across Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja, which resulted in the loss of over 65 lives.
Falana made this plea on Friday in Akure during the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series, an event organized by the Ondo State Government in honor of the late governor.
He criticized the Nigeria Police for failing to ensure adequate security during the distribution of palliatives, which he identified as the primary cause of the tragedies.
“This wasn’t about poverty—it was a failure of security. If there’s any gathering or process, the police are mandated to provide protection,” Falana asserted.
He also commended Ondo State for setting an example of effective local security through the establishment of the Ondo State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, by the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Falana highlighted the peace maintained in Ondo as a model for other states to emulate.
