Emergency meeting: Tinubu summons cabinet ahead of August 1st planned protest

An emergency meeting has been arranged for this Wednesday morning by the Bola Tinubu-led administration of Nigeria to discuss the upcoming August 1 nationwide demonstration, which is being branded #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.
The circular states that the meeting is required and that the topic of discussion would be the upcoming nationwide demonstration. The country's growing cost of living and economic hardship, which are attributed to the elimination of the fuel subsidy and other economic changes, are the reasons behind the protest. Social media buzz over the planned protest has made hashtags like "TinubuMustGo" and "EndBadGovernance" surge.

The President pleaded with Nigerians to put the plan on hold and wait for the government's answer to their entreaties, through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. According to Idris, the President has requested that the youth pay attention to him and give him more time to carry out his intentions for them.
The conference is perceived as an effort by the government to quell the anticipated protest and address the mounting unhappiness among Nigerians.

In the meantime, the protest organizers for August 1 have continued to receive threats and warnings from his government security services.

Opposition leaders, including former vice president Atiku Abubakar, have, nevertheless, maintained Nigerians' constitutionally guaranteed right to protest.

Nigeria faces a record high inflation rate in June 2024 of 34.19% as a result of the naira's two devaluations and the elimination of the fuel subsidy.

Nigeria's interest rates have increased by a total of 800 basis points due to inflationary trends, from 18.75 percent last July to 26.75 percent currently. The central bank is still using monetary tools to try to repair the damaged economy.

Currently, food inflation stands at 40.87 percent, making up the greatest percentage of headline inflation. The last year has seen a sharp increase in the cost of energy and transportation, which has made living difficult for most people.

To address the rising expense of living, a number of groups have stated that they will start anti-government rallies from August 1 to August 10, called "10 days of rage, #EndBadGovernance."
