EFCC Launches Probe Into Bobrisky's ₦15m Bribery Allegation
EFCC Chairman Olukoyede orders an investigation into Bobrisky’s claims of bribery by EFCC officers, ensuring a transparent probe into the ₦15 million allegation.
The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has launched a formal investigation into the bribery allegations made by Nigerian social media personality and crossdresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky. In a viral video, Bobrisky claimed that EFCC officers had extorted ₦15 million from him in exchange for dropping money laundering charges. This claim was highlighted by fellow online personality Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, who shared the allegations across social media platforms, increasing public awareness and scrutiny.
In response to the video, Olukoyede swiftly constituted a team of investigators to thoroughly examine the allegations. He directed both Bobrisky and Otse to present themselves at the EFCC's Lagos Directorate to assist with the investigation. This action emphasizes the seriousness of the claims and the EFCC's commitment to transparency and accountability.
According to Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at the EFCC, the commission is determined to get to the bottom of the matter and assures the public that the findings will be made public once the investigation is complete. Oyewale reiterated that the EFCC remains steadfast in upholding its core values of integrity, courage, professionalism, and collaboration, especially when handling sensitive allegations involving its officers.
Bobrisky, who had previously served jail time for currency-related offenses, has added significant public pressure on the EFCC with his bribery accusations. The allegations have also brought renewed attention to the EFCC’s internal operations, with the leadership keen to demonstrate that the agency will not tolerate corruption or unethical behavior from its officers.
This investigation comes at a time when the EFCC is already under scrutiny, and its leadership has reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy for corruption, stating that any wrongdoing uncovered during the probe will be handled with full transparency. The outcome of this investigation is expected to either clear the officers involved or hold them accountable for their actions, based on the evidence gathered.
