EFCC Intensifies Investigation into Ex-Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Financial Activities
The EFCC is intensifying its investigation into former Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki, focusing on contracts and financial dealings during his tenure. Obaseki has pledged cooperation, while no concrete evidence has yet been found.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has ramped up its probe into the financial dealings of former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, scrutinizing contracts and transactions from his eight-year tenure.
Obaseki, who left office on November 12, had previously alleged that the EFCC intended to arrest him immediately after his term ended. Meanwhile, the state’s new governor, Monday Okpebholo, has launched a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to assess Obaseki’s administration.
On November 2, the EFCC detained five senior officials from Obaseki’s government, including Accountant General Julius Anelu, over significant withdrawals made from the state treasury.
Despite the probe, Obaseki has expressed his willingness to cooperate, stating on November 8 that he is ready to account for his actions as governor and is unafraid of the EFCC’s investigation.
EFCC insiders revealed that while the investigation is ongoing, no conclusive evidence of misconduct directly implicating Obaseki has been uncovered. An anonymous source explained, “He delegated responsibilities to others, and so far, many transactions are not directly tied to him. The investigation is following leads on contracts and financial activities under his administration.”
Additionally, Obaseki, like other former governors, has been placed on the EFCC’s watch list to ensure he remains within reach during the investigation. “This is standard practice to prevent ex-governors from leaving the country while cases are under review,” an EFCC source stated.
