Edo decides 2024: PDP Governors announce election results before INEC
The PDP has controversially announced Edo State's governorship election results ahead of INEC's official declaration, revealing a tight race between their candidate Asue Ighodalo and APC's Senator Monday Okpebholo.
In a bold move that some might view as desperation, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has preemptively announced the results of Saturday's governorship election in Edo State, despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) being the sole authority designated by the Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act to declare such results.
During a press conference on Sunday, just before INEC began its official collation at the central Collation Centre in Benin City, PDP governors took the stage to reveal their version of the election outcomes. Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintiri, flanked by other party governors, asserted that the figures presented were sourced from “our collation agent before INEC disrupted the process.”
The ongoing election sees a fierce contest between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP, with both parties vying for control in Edo State. According to a Sunday morning update from DAILY POST, INEC had uploaded around 97 percent of results from the 4,519 polling units onto its Results Viewing (IReV) portal.
Current data shows that the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, is leading in the Edo South Senatorial District, while his APC rival, Senator Monday Okpebholo, holds the advantage in the Edo North Senatorial District. The tight race promises a dramatic conclusion as the official results are finalized.
