Do2dtun blasts Tyla over VMA acceptance speech
Do2dtun takes aim at South African singer Tyla for her acceptance speech at the VMAs, criticizing her for accepting an Afrobeats award despite claiming her music is Amapiano. His response highlights tensions over genre classification and representation in the global music industry.
Nigerian on-air personality Do2dtun has publicly criticized South African singer Tyla following her controversial acceptance speech at the VMAs, where she took home the Best Afrobeats Award. Tyla, whose hit song “Water” has garnered international acclaim, was nominated alongside Afrobeats heavyweights like Davido, Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr. However, her remarks questioning the lumping of all African artists under the Afrobeats label sparked heated reactions.
Tyla voiced her discontent during her acceptance, pointing out that her music represents Amapiano, not Afrobeats, and expressed frustration over the genre misclassification despite its growing global impact.
In response, Do2dtun took to social media to call out Tyla’s perceived inconsistency. He challenged her stance, arguing that if she felt misrepresented, she should have rejected the award altogether. “Aunty @tyla aka ‘I am not Afrobeats, I am Amapiano,’ we have heard you, but your song ‘Water’ isn’t Amapiano either. If you thought you were in the wrong category, you should have given the award back or denounced the nomination. You clearly took an award that didn’t represent you or your sound from that statement you made,” Do2dtun wrote.
He further criticized artists for blurring the lines between musical genres, adding, “You see why you ‘ESAUS’ need to rethink. You all sold our birthright for peanuts. Afrobeat is Afrobeat, not Afrobeats, hence the confusion.”
Do2dtun’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate about genre classifications and the complexities of African music representation on the global stage, reflecting broader tensions within the music community.
