Local authorities report that 229 people have died as a result of two landslides that occurred on Monday in a remote area of southern Ethiopia.
Gofa Zone's communication relations department reported on Tuesday that 81 women and 148 men had perished.
Children were among the dead, and the number of fatalities was probably going to rise, a local official named Habtamu Fetena had earlier informed the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), a state-run broadcaster.
Geological surveys have shown that landslides are common in Ethiopia during the rainy season. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated in a report last month that floods brought on by persistent rains have uprooted thousands of people from several sections of the nation, including the southern region.
OCHA reported in November that landslides and floods claimed the lives of at least 43 persons in 2018.
Numerous people have been killed and displaced by destructive landslides that have previously struck southern Ethiopia.
In the West Arsi, Sidama, and Gamo Gofa zones in May 2018, there were two landslides that occurred within hours of each other, resulting in 45 fatalities.
