Davido Faces Backlash Over Comments on Black Americans Returning to Nigeria
Davido faces criticism over his remarks advising black Americans against relocating to Nigeria, citing economic challenges. Read reactions from APC leaders and public figures.
Afrobeats superstar Davido has sparked controversy after advising black Americans, particularly Nigerians in the diaspora, against relocating to Nigeria due to the country’s current economic challenges.
During an appearance on The Big Homies House podcast, Davido addressed speculations about black Americans considering leaving the United States following Donald Trump’s election victory. He remarked, “It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles.”
His statement has drawn criticism from various quarters. Prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) member Joe Igbokwe took to Facebook to express his disappointment, urging Davido to retract the comment. “My in-law Davido has made me sad by telling the world in America that Nigeria’s economy is in shambles. This is very sad. I will advise him to retract the statement asap. Nigeria made Davido. QED!!!” Igbokwe wrote.
Similarly, Bashir Ahmad, former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, condemned the remark on X (formerly Twitter), calling it “disappointing and unpatriotic.” He added, “Public figures like Davido should act as good ambassadors for Nigeria wherever they are.”
The singer’s comment has reignited debates about patriotism and the responsibility of influential figures to represent their country positively on global platforms.
