Darkness hits Rivers, as vandals destroy 13 TCN towers
Rivers and Bayelsa states face months of power outages after vandals destroyed thirteen TCN towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa line.
Parts of Rivers and Bayelsa states are set to endure prolonged power outages after vandals demolished thirteen Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV Double Circuits. TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, announced this in a statement on Wednesday, emphasizing the severe impact of the damage.
The TCN called on the governments of Rivers and Bayelsa states to collaborate in combating the escalating vandalism of critical infrastructure, which has reached alarming levels. Despite ongoing efforts to reinforce the Ahoada-Yenagoa line, where earlier towers were also targeted, this recent wave of destruction has created a significant setback.
The thirteen towers, crucial for power distribution, were located across several communities including Okobe in Ahoada East, Emezhi 1 and Mbiama in Ahoada West Local Government Areas of Rivers State, as well as the Igbogene community in Bayelsa State. The TCN warned that due to the extensive damage and the need to complete previous repairs, it could take several months to restore power.
In response to this crisis, TCN urged a stronger collaboration between security agencies and host communities to protect the nation’s electricity infrastructure from further attacks.
