Copyright: Court orders removal of Adele’s song from streaming platforms
A Brazilian court orders Adele’s song Million Years Ago removed from streaming platforms over alleged copyright infringement of Toninho Geraes’ 1996 hit Mulheres.
A Brazilian court has ruled that Adele’s song Million Years Ago be removed from radio and streaming platforms worldwide following allegations of copyright infringement.
The judgment, delivered by Judge Victor Torres, came after Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes accused Adele of copying elements of his 1996 hit Mulheres, performed by iconic Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila. Geraes claims Adele’s 2015 track closely mirrors his composition, originally featured on his 1995 album.
Geraes is demanding $160,000 in moral damages, a share of lost royalties, and a songwriting credit on Million Years Ago. In addition, the court has threatened Sony and Universal’s Brazilian subsidiaries with fines of $8,000 for each instance of non-compliance with the removal order.
The case has sparked widespread attention, with music fans and industry experts weighing in on the controversial ruling as Adele’s team prepares to respond to the legal claims.
