Breaking: Fire outbreak at NNPC oil well
There has been news of a fire at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company 18 Operating Limited's Akaso 4 Wellhead in Rivers State. Olaide Shonola, a spokesman for the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Eighteen Operating Limited reported a fire incident on the Akaso 4 Wellhead, Rivers State, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). This was revealed in a statement released on Saturday by Laide Shonola, the NUPRC's Head of Public Affairs and Corporate Communications.
According to NNPC 18 Operating Limited, a rapid reaction emergency team has been sent in to guard the well, deal with the situation, and use spill containment measures to isolate the impacted area in order to stop the contamination of the surrounding area and its spread.
It clarified that the incident's cause is yet unknown. Concurrently, the commission said that a collaborative inquiry including pertinent parties is being organized to ascertain the reason and the extent of influence.
The NUPRC clarified that Kenyon International West Africa Company, the contractor assigned to handle the matter, is encountering certain difficulties in extinguishing the fire.
"Instead of the heat extraction approach that is currently being used, they now intend to implement the entire oxygen extraction method. The contractor is waiting on the well owners to mobilize the equipment, which is 100% finished. On-site contractors are keeping an eye on the situation," the statement continued.
The NUPRC went on to say that a meeting with NNPC 18 Operating Limited's management is scheduled to discuss the safety and integrity of the company's operations. "As soon as new details regarding the incident become available, we will promptly furnish them."
