Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been encouraged by former PDP Deputy National Chairman Chief Bode George to wait till 2031 before running for president again. George emphasized that a Southerner must hold the presidency from 2023 to 2031, citing the PDP constitution and Nigeria’s political reality. He urged Atiku to follow President Joe Biden’s lead by resigning for younger generations, pointing out that he would be 81 by 2027.
George emphasized the value of zoning and rotation for justice, fairness, and equity, citing Section 7, Subsection 3(C) of the PDP Constitution. He underlined that following President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year rule, power cannot return to the North in 2027. “In the current political climate, this is the morally correct and sensible course of action for our party. However, as a brother, friend, and party member, I shall counsel Alhaji Abubakar to hold off on running for office until 2031 if he is adamant about doing so. He will be eighty-five by then.
