“Becky Enenche lied” – Reno Omokri reacts to Paul Enenche’s wife’s statement on tithing
Reno Omokri responds to Becky Enenche's claim about returning to square one for missing tithes, accusing her and her husband of exploiting Christianity for financial gain and criticizing the politicization of religion.
Popular political activist Reno Omokri has responded to recent remarks made by Becky Enenche, wife of Pastor Paul Enenche, regarding the consequences of missing tithes. Becky had stirred controversy by claiming that failing to pay tithes would cause one to "return to square one."
In a pointed reaction on Instagram, Reno Omokri accused her of distorting religious teachings for financial gain. He argued that Becky and her husband have commercialized Christianity, transforming it into a "scam" that exploits followers rather than fostering spiritual growth. He wrote that this brand of Godliness is more about profit than about holiness, and he lamented how such practices have tarnished the image of Christianity in Nigeria.
Omokri went on to critique the politicization of religion, specifically mentioning Paul Enenche’s involvement in the 2023 Nigerian elections, where he supported Peter Obi. Omokri noted that Enenche's curses against political opponents had not manifested, pointing to President Bola Tinubu's apparent good health.
He further dissected biblical interpretations about tithing, explaining that terms like "devourer" used in Malachi 3:11 referred to agricultural pests, not to divine punishment for failing to tithe. Citing various modern translations of the Bible, Omokri stressed that tithes were originally an agricultural tax for the Levitical priests, and that Jesus never collected tithes, mentioning them only in the context of agriculture.
Omokri's response has ignited a debate on the true meaning of tithing and the commercialization of faith in Nigeria, with his post gaining widespread attention online.
