Bayern Leverkusen wins German Super Cup
Stuttgart's hopes of winning the German Super Cup were saved by a late equalizer, but Bayer Leverkusen won on penalties.
Stuttgart needed a late equalizer to keep their chances of winning the German Super Cup alive, but Bayer Leverkusen prevailed on penalties. Starting last season, Xabi Alonso's team played 51 games without a loss, only falling to Atalanta in the Europa League final while winning the German double. But, they were two minutes away from being shocked by the runners-up of the previous Bundesliga season in their opening match of the 2024–25 season at home. Edmond Tapsoba's header found Victor Boniface, who tapped the league champions' first goal into an empty net.
However, Enzo Millot tied the score with his first-ever drive from 16 yards out in the fifteenth minute. Martin Terrier, making his debut for Leverkusen, was then sent off for a reckless foul on Ermedin Demirovic. After spending last season on loan at Stuttgart, Deniz Undav, a permanent summer addition from Brighton, gave the visitors the early advantage with his first touch after coming off the bench. But with two minutes left, Patrik Schick scored off a through pass from Alex Grimaldo to equalize the score at two and force extra time. Leverkusen prevailed 4-3 in the shootout, with Stuttgart's Frans Kratzig and Silas being the only two to miss their spot penalties. These teams competed in the German Super Cup for the second time; Stuttgart won in 1992, while Leverkusen lost the following year.
Following the German league and cup from the previous season, the 1988 Uefa Cup, and the 1993 German Cup, this is Leverkusen's sixth major prize overall. Notable was the fact that Bayern Munich, who placed third in the Bundesliga the previous season, had not participated in a German Super Cup since 2011.
