Basketmouth slams filmmakers for failing to showcase Nigeria’s culture in movies
Basketmouth critiques Nigerian filmmakers for missing opportunities to showcase the nation’s culture in epic movies, urging for better storytelling and authenticity.
Comedian and filmmaker Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has criticized Nigerian filmmakers for failing to effectively showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage in their epic movies.
Speaking in an interview with Hip TV, Basketmouth expressed disappointment at how some recent productions missed the opportunity to highlight Nigeria’s diverse traditions and history on a global stage.
“I believe we still have the chance to get it right,” he said. “But many filmmakers wasted a golden opportunity to showcase our culture. Watching some of these epic movies felt like watching stage plays, not cinema-worthy productions.”
He noted that only a handful of films have managed to impress him, urging filmmakers to step up their efforts in portraying Nigeria’s unique culture with authenticity and quality.
Despite his critiques, Basketmouth remains hopeful that the Nigerian film industry will seize future opportunities to strike the right cultural and creative balance in its storytelling.
