ASUU threatens another strike
ASUU warns the public not to blame the union for any strike action after a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, urging action on unresolved issues in public universities
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned parents, guardians, and the public not to blame the union for any strike action following the end of a 14-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government.
ASUU, through its Bauchi Zonal Coordinator, Namo Timothy Aku, stated that despite the union’s efforts to maintain peaceful relations, the Federal Government has failed to address key issues.
In a statement, ASUU said its National Executive Council (NEC) met in August 2024 and issued a 21-day ultimatum to resolve outstanding issues, including the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-Federal Government agreement, unpaid salaries, Earned Academic Allowances, and the funding of public universities.
The ultimatum expired on September 14, 2024, with the government failing to take necessary actions. ASUU noted concerns over the government's refusal to remove universities from the IPPIS payroll system and implement critical recommendations from visitation panels.
ASUU warned that if the Federal Government does not address these issues within 14 days, starting from September 23, 2024, it should not be held responsible for any strike action.
