Football pundit Jamie Carragher has stirred conversation by claiming that Manchester City must be getting frustrated with Arsenal’s tactics after more recent games. What was more worrying to some, mainly Carragher, was how Arsenal appeared to have to unsettle City’s usual pattern of performance with their formation and set-up play during the League game against them on Sunday 22nd September 2024 at the Etihad Stadium.
City, through a stoppage-time equaliser from John Stones, struggled to get a draw against Arsenal, who were down to ten men for such of the second half. Carragher highlighted how Arsenal’s defensive approach tactics and overall game plan seemed to have put City under pressure. Their attempts at tactical fouling and general time-wasting were even compared to some of the infamous tactics used by former Chelsea coach José Mourinho. Players of Manchester City, John Stones, and Bernardo Silva also joined the list of Arsenal bashers, and even after the match, they also tweeted that Arsenal interrupted the match, they are not football.
Carragher’s comments point to a larger theme this season: Arsenal is becoming a major challenger to Manchester City for the Premier League dominance. However, City do have a slight edge on the depth and experience of their team, and the spirited fight from Arsenal’s side and their ability to disrupt City could signal that a rivalry is emerging. In the course of the season, Carragher suggested that perhaps the tactics employed by Arsenal might just be the determining factor for the title, though it currently remains his favourite to win it.
