Popular Indian actor Allu Arjun was arrested on Friday following a tragic stampede at a screening of his highly anticipated film, Pushpa 2: The Rule. The incident, which occurred on December 4 in Hyderabad, claimed the life of a woman and left several others injured, including her young son.
Thousands of fans had gathered outside the theatre to catch a glimpse of the 42-year-old actor, whose appearance allegedly triggered the chaos. Arjun was taken into custody on suspicion of three offences, including “voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means,” as stated by a police officer.
Seven others, including members of his security team and theatre staff, were also arrested in connection with the tragedy. Video footage from TV9 showed Arjun holding a coffee mug and speaking calmly to police officers at his residence before his arrest. Later in the day, he was granted interim bail for four weeks, as reported by local media.
The victim, a woman in her 30s, had attended the screening with her son, who sustained serious injuries in the stampede. The family has filed a formal complaint against Arjun, his security team, and the theatre management, citing negligence.
Two days after the incident, Arjun expressed his sorrow on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I am deeply heartbroken. While respecting their need for space to grieve, I stand committed to extending every possible assistance to help them navigate through this challenging journey.”
Arjun, a celebrated figure in Indian cinema, particularly in southern India, enjoys an immense fan following. His Pushpa series has been a blockbuster hit, with the first installment earning him a Best Actor award at India’s National Film Awards.
