Akpabio Denies Harassment Claims During Senate Session

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has publicly refuted allegations of sexual harassment brought against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. This denial occurred during a Senate plenary session on Wednesday, following a week-long break.

Akpabio emphasized his commitment to respecting women, stating, “At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother, and I have always upheld respect for women. I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.” He mentioned that he had received numerous calls regarding the allegations since February 25 and was aware of the ongoing discussions about the matter on social media. Akpabio urged the public and media to refrain from jumping to conclusions and to await the court’s decision on the issue.

In response to his remarks, Akpoti-Uduaghan formally raised a petition under Order 40, accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office, requesting it be officially submitted to the Senate. The Senate subsequently referred the petition to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for further investigation.

The controversy initially arose in February due to a seat rearrangement that led to a confrontation between the two senators. This disagreement has sparked tension within the Senate and raised concerns regarding the conduct of lawmakers. During the recent session, Akpoti-Uduaghan occupied her new seat but did not stand to acknowledge Akpabio’s entrance—a departure from the customary practice of showing respect to the presiding officer.

“He said he would like that state clearly that at no time did he attempt any sexual harassment to any other woman including senator and he also said he has high regard for woman and he also said he has 4 beautiful daughters and his late mother who died in 2002 and even in her demise, he still cries till today. He also said he was awarded the most gender friendly governor. I urge all Nigerians to await the court’s decision and not jump to conclusions from mere allegations.”
