Afrobeats Artists Are Lazy – Flavour
Nigerian highlife singer Flavour supports Buju Banton's critique of Afrobeats, calling it a genre that lacks depth due to artists' laziness.
Nigerian highlife legend Chinedu Okoli, famously known as Flavour, has aligned himself with Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton’s controversial critique of Afrobeats, stating that the genre lacks depth.
Buju Banton recently made headlines when he dismissed Afrobeats as "f*ckery," claiming that the genre is devoid of substance and destined to fade over time. In response, Flavour, during an appearance on the 'In My Opinion' podcast, expressed agreement with Banton’s sentiments.
Flavour elaborated, noting that the current generation of Afrobeats artists lacks the drive to create meaningful music. "I get what Buju Banton is saying. Today’s artists just want to vibe without the stress of depth," Flavour remarked, hinting that Banton's criticism might be a wake-up call for the industry.
Distancing himself from the Afrobeats label, Flavour emphasized that he remains a dedicated highlife artist. He also criticized the tendency of Western media to lump all African artists under the Afrobeats umbrella, underscoring his commitment to preserving the rich traditions of highlife music.
