John Amos, known for his role as the stoic father on Good Times, America’s first sitcom featuring a two-parent Black family, and for his part in Roots, the highly acclaimed slavery narrative that became the most-watched show in the late 1970s, has passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 84.
His son, K.C. Amos, announced that he died of natural causes, stating, “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life, and his legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
Amos began his acting career with Melvin Van Peebles’ blaxploitation classic Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (1971) and later portrayed the manager of a McDonald’s-like restaurant in Coming to America (1988), where he hired an African prince (Eddie Murphy) and his right-hand man (Arsenio Hall).
