Olympics: COVID-19 Outbreak hits the 2024 Paris Olympics
Athletes who have tested positive for COVID-19 include swimmers from several nations and Noah Lyles, a standout track player for Team USA.
Noah Lyles, the most recent in a line of cases since the Olympics started, disclosed that he tested positive for Covid after collapsing to the ground during his 200-meter race today. It was discovered earlier this week that at least forty competitors tested positive during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Because testing and reporting differ by team, it is still unknown how many Covid-19 cases there were during the Paris Olympics.
In response to a query regarding Covid policies and the number of incidents among its competitors, the International Olympic Committee did not immediately answer, according to NBC News today. A representative for the 2024 Paris Games stated that participants are often informed "of the good practices to adopt should they experience any respiratory symptoms."
Manuel Eitel, a German decathlete, said that he has withdrawn from the Games because of COVID-19. "One of the worst days of my life is today, and it always will be." The 27-year-old posted in German on Tuesday, July 30, saying, "I have to cancel my entry for the Paris Olympics for 2024 due to COVID infection."
Maltese swimmer Sasha Batt also revealed on social media that she had been diagnosed with COVID-19. One of five athletes from Malta competing in the Olympics in Paris, the 19-year-old tested positive for COVID-19 on July 30, according to an email from a media representative for the Maltese Olympic Committee.
The spokeswoman states, "She is in good health and is being monitored by the team doctor." After competing in the women's 1,500 meter freestyle heat, Batt was eliminated.
Shortly after winning the silver medal in the men's 200-meter breaststroke final on Wednesday, Australian swimmer Zac Stubblety-Cook disclosed on Instagram that he was "dealing with COVID". "On Wednesday, Stubbety-Cook completed a five-day course of antivirals for Covid," the Australian Olympic Committee emails TODAY.com. Another Australian swimmer, Lani Pallister, tested positive for COVID-19 as well. "The five-day course (of antivirals) is currently being completed by relay swimmer Lani Pallister," the AOC reports.
