Tunde Onakoya Pledges Full Education Sponsorship for Young Girl

Renowned Nigerian chess player and coach, Tunde Onakoya, known for holding the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon chess game, has once again demonstrated his deep commitment to uplifting the underprivileged. Through his Chess in Slums Africa initiative, he has consistently empowered children from low-income backgrounds, using chess as a tool to provide them with education and career opportunities.

Recently, a viral video surfaced online showing a woman bringing her child to an estate at 4:30 a.m. to assist with sweeping. The footage sparked widespread discussion, but when it caught the attention of Tunde Onakoya, he responded with compassion rather than criticism.

Taking to his social media, Onakoya expressed his strong disapproval of the way the mother was humiliated in front of her daughter. He reflected on his own past, revealing that in 2016, his mother also had to sweep houses and gutters to make ends meet. At the time, he was financially powerless to assist her, but he often accompanied her to help fetch water so they could finish early and avoid being seen.

“The poverty that pushes one to hide their labor in the dark is a painful one,” he wrote, emphasizing how deeply he related to the young girl’s situation.

Acknowledging that no child should be working at such an early age, he stressed that rather than simply expressing outrage, the true humane response should be compassion and action. He then made a life-changing promiseto fully sponsor the young girl’s education through university, ensuring she has a brighter future.
