Renowned Nigerian rapper and activist Michael Stephens, better known as Ruggedman, has opened up about why he remains unmarried and childless at the age of 51. Speaking during a recent appearance on TVC’s Your View, the music star disclosed that he made a vow in his younger years never to have a child out of wedlock—a decision he still stands by today.
“I am not married and do not have a child yet. When I was much younger, I vowed never to have a child out of wedlock. Sometimes, I wonder whether I made the right or wrong decision. But still, it takes a lot from both parties. You have to do it with someone you really love,” he explained.
Ruggedman also shared insights into his past relationships, revealing that he had met women he thought he would settle down with, but circumstances prevented things from working out.
“I have met some ladies I thought I would end up with, but it didn’t work out. There was a particular lady I was supposed to marry, but a wealthy man came into the picture, and her mother separated us,” he recalled.
Despite being in his early fifties, the rapper noted that his family, particularly his mother, has never pressured him to get married. In a previous 2021 interview, he shared that his loved ones respected his decision, emphasizing that he would tie the knot when he feels ready.
Ruggedman, widely recognized for his impact on Nigerian hip-hop and activism, remains one of the country’s most respected music figures. While fans continue to anticipate new music from him, his personal life remains a topic of interest. Whether or not marriage and fatherhood are in his near future, the rapper remains committed to his principles.
In the same program Ruggedman had also pointed out an important problem in abusive relationships: many people see the warning signs but decide to stay because it benefits them personally or they are scared of what others will think. He strongly recommended that people avoid unhealthy relationships and highlighted how important it is to take care of yourself.
Ruggedman began his music journey in 1999. He made his own songs and put out two popular tracks in 1999. He puts out all his albums on his own label, Rugged Records. Ruggedman’s music label, Rugged Records, signed its first artist, singer MBRYO, in September 2012. MBRYO appeared on Ruggedman’s song “Ruggedy Baba pt 2,” which was made by Blaize Beatz. “Money Making Music” is an album by Ruggedman released in 2012. It features MBRYO and helps promote the artist. The album also featured special performances by Terry G and Funb.
