8 vehicles Burnt in Ibadan as Petrol Tanker Explodes
A devastating fire broke out on the Ibadan-Ife Expressway, caused by a petroleum tanker explosion at Iyana Ajia, Egbeda.
The Oyo State Fire Service has confirmed a serious fire incident that took place along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway on Saturday, September 7, 2024. A petroleum tanker ignited near Iyana Ajia in Egbeda Local Government Area, sending plumes of smoke into the air and causing panic in the community.
Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the State Fire Service, disclosed that the blaze erupted around 5:45 p.m. The fire, believed to have been sparked by local residents trying to siphon fuel from a leaking tanker, quickly engulfed the vehicle’s pump, leaving significant destruction in its wake. Several people sustained minor injuries during the incident.
In addition to the tanker itself, four other vehicles were destroyed: one 18-passenger bus, a small truck, another petroleum tanker, and a Micra car. The fire left several families displaced and caused extensive damage to nearby properties, underlining the risks associated with tampering with hazardous materials. Investigations into the cause and full extent of the losses are ongoing.
